Planning to get a Mountain Bike? Keep these things in mind before you go shopping.

Before you lock on your decision, it is essential to determine your usage with the bike and how the bike can help you based on where you live.

If you are a beginner and want to start your cycling journey mountain bikes or MTB is the right choice.

Mountain bikes are usually used on rugged terrains where the roads are more challenging to ride like flat roads. They have flat handlebars, are heavier and have fat tyres that are good for grip and traction on rough terrains. They are also used for fitness and exercise purposes.

To choose the right bike, there are certain specifications that need to be understood

Type of Bike:

  1. Trail Bike :

Trail bikes are ideal for cycling on uneven terrains. This type of bike is great for beginners. This bike gives importance to speed, design, weight and comfort.

  2. Fat Bike :

As the name suggests, these bikes have even more fat tyres than usual mountain bikes. ( Fatso from Cosmic Cycles image). These cycles are perfect for sandy and snowy terrains as the tyre itself is built in for these terrains

  3. All Purpose Mountain Bike :

These bikes are combined of the above 2 categories. They can be ridden uphill or downhill. They are lightweight and also have a good balance.

Types of Suspension

  1. Rigid :

These bikes actually don't have any suspension on either of the tyres. These suspensions are risky unless they are used on fat bikes. Fat bikes naturally improve on their suspension because of their oversized cushion tyres.

  2. Hardtrail :

Hand trail suspension as the name suggests, is placed on the back tyre. Lesser maintenance and costs lesser compared to the suspension types.

  3. Full Suspension :

The suspension is placed on both the front and rear tyres. It's easier to ride because of the more shock-absorbing capacity of the cycle. It has great traction and grip considering the suspension and the tyre’s efficiency. It costs a little more than the other two suspension types.

Types of Wheel Sizes

One of the most common sizes is 26 inches. Easy to drive through tough and tricky terrains. It's ideal for beginners to choose this wheel size as it matches the comfort and weight of the cycle.

27.5 inches is the next type of wheel size. It is a little bigger than the previous one and has better traction and grip power. For beginners, it is slightly difficult to handle because of the big tyre size. This wheel generally comes with a hardtrail or full suspension model The next bigger size wheel model that comes is the 29-inch. This model is compatible with all 3 types of suspension. These wheel sizes are best suited for long-distance travel.

Types of Frames:

There are several types of frames that come and each has its own features and come at different prices. Based on the usage of the bike, a selection has to be made.

Steel Frame: It’s comparatively the least in pricing, and also has high strength and durability and adds weight to the cycle. The steel frame is not right for Mountain Bikes.

Titanium Frame: This frame is light in nature and gives good strength. This frame is more expensive than the rest. It is categorised under high-end bikes.

Carbon Frame: The next best ideal frame is the carbon frame. This frame is expensive because the manufacturing process is long.

Aluminium Alloy: This alloy is the right choice for anyone. It balances strength and weight and it is affordable.

Types of Gears and Brakes

As for gears are concerned, for steep terrains more gears are needed and for flat terrains, cycles can have very minimum gears or no gears at all.

Hydraulic Brakes: These are the most ideal brakes for mountain bikes. They are strong and even with a minimum effort the cycle would stop.

Activated Disk Brake: These brakes are not very strong and require a lot of manual effort which might cause discomfort.

The other things to factor in; are the seat height, the height of the handlebar, and the comfort of the entire cycle. It's important to feel comfortable so you are able to enjoy your riding experience.

Happy Riding!
